Wait...is this a Geek Girl post, or a Layout post?

It's actually both. :)

Geek Girl The College Years.jpg

While I was looking through photos to use in May Flaum's Creative Retreat class I came across these geeky shots from college (I'm not in them because I was holding the camera).

You see, I went to school to get a degree in Computer Science, which means I learned to write code. In fact, I learned to write code very well (hence the reason I do it for a living now). But I learned to write code so well in school that I was chosen to be on our university's team at the ACM International Programming Contest in 2000!

I'd totally forgotten about this little experience (and no, we didn't win- not even close!) until I came across the photos and negatives in my to-scan pile (remnants of my non DLSR days, ::sigh::).

I picked one of my funky, fun Pink Ninja kits from last fall to use for this page (I'm really turning into a kit scrapper, aren't I?). This one included lots of Sassafras's "Nerdy Bird" line, which was just perfect given the subject!!

Once a Geek Girl, always a Geek Girl, right? :)

Geek Girl: The Book That Bent My Brain

Sunday, April 3, 2011

There are those who say that my brain was already slightly warped before I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the book just finished the job off.

To them I say...you're probably right. :)

Whatever the order of events, this comic masterpiece by Douglas Adams is definitely my favorite book, and also the one that I tell people they need to read if they want to understand me. It's zany, off-the-wall, and completely irreverent (and there's more than a little sci-fi thrown in, as well). It also explains my obsession with towels and the number 42.

I've noticed lately that I own an inordinate number of copies of this book (though I know some Jane Austen fans who probably have more editions of Pride and Prejudice). The one I've read the most is the massive hard-bound one (containing all five novels in the Hitchhiker's trilogy) that I've had since high school. I think my parents bought it for me on a trip to Books a Million.

I was thrilled to find this "classics" edition of H2G2 while wandering through Barnes and Noble (on a business trip, no less) one day a few years ago.

It came complete with faux leather binding...

...and gold edged pages!

I also recently aquired an iPad version (on the Barnes and Noble Nook app)...

...and my Dad still picks up copies whenever he spots them at yard sales or the used book store. I've got quite a little collection going there, too. :)

And, before you ask, I haven't seen the movie or the BBC television show- I believe this is one of those books that just has to be read to really get it. Now, the recent Dirk Gently remake? That I can get behind!

Friday Favorites: April 1, 2011

Friday, April 1, 2011

Please excuse me for being brain-dead tonight, but it's been a very long, difficult week at work again. I'm not going to complain too much, though, because I don't have to work tomorrow (how strange is it to celebrate not working on a Saturday, when that's usually a given?) and plan on pretty much locking myself in my scrap room all day tomorrow. I've got to finish up a couple of things for my Counterfeit Kit DT work for April...and all I'm gonna say is that you guys are going to LOVE the kit they picked to copy this month!

Here are a few inspiring things I wanted to share this week:

From left to right:
  • After my Pantone article on Scrapbook Update last week, I just had to share these great DIY Pantone magnets found on How About Orange.
  • It's been a little while since I shared a mini album here. This gorgeous piece of work hails from SEI Lifestyle.
  • If you're a bit "misting challenged" like me, you'll definitely want to check out Ella Publishing's article from last month!
  • I just had to choose this page From Jenni Bowlin Studio to share after seeing all those awesome shipping tags used to make the background- what a great idea!
  • Visit the Whimsical World of Laura Bird to learn to make these beautiful paper flowers.
  • Check out Aussie Scrap Source's article on make-it-yourself stamps for some great ideas and pretty layouts.
  • Who doesn't love getting a peek into another scrapper's space? Check out this great new stamping/cardmaking room at Stamp Talk With Tosh.
  • I love Thickers, but hate the serious shortage of vowels in each package. I need to be better about using my Cricut to make titles, and luckily there's a post on Two Peas in a Bucket matching freely available fonts to Thicker styles! Now I have no excuses for not cutting my own.
  • I love, love, love this paper banner used as a cake decoration, found at 100 Layer Cake. So pretty!
Have a scrappy weekend!
