Lawn Fawn December 2018 Inspiration Week // Tiny Gift Box Raccoon and Fox Add-On

Monday, December 10, 2018

So, how was that for a long blog post title? Ha!

Some of Lawn Fawn's products can have some long names, though, especially when they are of the add-on variety. I am totally on board with any length of name for these little cuties, though, because the Raccoon and Fox add-ons to the Tiny Gift Box die are simply adorable!

I said a couple of posts ago that I couldn't stay away from the glitter with this release, and I had such fun using Lawn Fawn's Sparkle Cardstock (these colors are from the Autumn pack) for the faces and tails on my boxes.

The add-ons and boxes are super easy to put together, but do take a bit of time to actually do all of the die cutting. And I cannot recommend the Lawn Fawn Glue Tube enough when putting these together- it made sticking all of those little pieces down so easy!

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I'll be back tomorrow with another projects from the Lawn Fawn Valentine's release!

Lawn Fawn December 2018 Inspiration Week // I Love You(calyptus)

Sunday, December 9, 2018

Koalas were my favorite animal when I was a kid, and are still one of my favorites today. Back then I practically memorized the book A Koala Grows Up and would get a bit miffed when people referred to them as bears (because they are, in fact, marsupials).

So, when Lawn Fawn came out with the new I Love You(calyptus) mini stamp set as part of their Valentine's release, I was pretty excited!

This card is pretty simple - I used the Zig Zag Rectangle dies (yes, again!) to cut a background from some green Gotta Have Gingham paper. I stamped the images onto Bristol paper with Lawn Fawn's Jet Black ink and colored with my Zig Clean Color Real Brush pens and a water brush. Then I layered the cut images over a die cut Sending Hugs die (also part of the new release), added some white Nuvo drops, and that was that!

Thanks so much for stopping by- I hope you have a great day!

P.S. While kid me read A Koala Grows Up to get my marsupial facts, grown up me very much enjoys the following (only slightly NSFW) educational video:

P.P.S. "Koala in the rain" has become a substitute for a phrase containing a certain four letter word in our house. :)

Lawn Fawn December 2018 Inspiration Week // Let's Toast

Saturday, December 8, 2018

We may be surrounded by all things Christmas right now, but Lawn Fawn is already gearing up to release their new Valentine's products at the end of next week- Thursday, December 13 to be exact! Today the design team is working with the adorable Let's Toast stamp set and coordinating dies, and I have a card to share!

I will admit that I just could not stay away from the glitter with this release! I used Lawn Fawn's sparkle cardstock on all but one project. There's just something about winter and Christmas that makes me want to bling all the things.

To make the card, I used the Zig Zag Rectangle dies to cut the white background, then cut a piece of watercolor paper using the Stitched Circles dies and blended Worn Lipstick and Tattered Rose Distress Oxide inks onto it. I stamped the images onto Bristol paper with Lawn Fawn's Jet Black ink (no heat embossing this time) and colored with my Zig Clean Color Real Brush pens and a water brush. Super cute, super simple, and super fun!

I'll be back tomorrow with the only card I made for this release that didn't include glitter- ha!! Until then, have a great day, and thanks so much for stopping by!

Confessions of a Planner Addict

Sunday, November 4, 2018

The last time I went to the CHA trade show, way back in January of 2016, something rather unexpected happened...I caught the planner bug. Blame it on the high of being surrounded by paper and stickers for days (it's like a sugar rush, a caffeine kick, and an adrenaline high at the same time), or on my being exhausted into a highly suggestible state (quite possibly caused by staying up a bit too late to catch that one last ride at Disneyland with the ever fabulous May Flaum right before the show started), but when I wandered into that Me and My Big Ideas booth and spotted all the new Happy Planners, I was instantly hooked.

I'm no stranger to MAMBI- I've loved their embellishments for years and raved about their journaling cards and Project Life-style pocket pages a few years ago. Until that fateful day when I walked into their booth, though, I had pretty much been blocking out all things planner and had completely missed out on the magic that is their disc bound system. I loved the idea of the simple laminated covers (though you can certainly have a fancy, plush cover if you want one!), and the mix of utility and style in their pages. As soon as my local store got the planners in stock, I rushed out to get my very first one.

Fast forward to now, and I currently use several Happy Planners at once. I only keep plans in one of them, and the others are pretty much fancy notebooks and trackers. My catch-all planner is a Classic size with a vertical layout, and it's where all of my appointments and scheduling items go. My life is actually kind of light on appointments (and heavy on to-dos, which I'll get to in a minute), so I tend to deck this one out a bit more than some of the others.

For instance, this week I went nuts with all the Halloween goodness! (The planner itself is the Squad Goals design from their release earlier this year.)

I keep track of all of those to-dos that I mentioned earlier in a Classic size planner with a Horizontal layout. (This planner is one from the 2017 release and will be over at the end of this year. I've already picked up another horizontal to take its place starting in January!)

I tend to fill these pages up pretty much completely every week as items pop up. Honestly, this planner probably helps save my sanity, and I try to brain dump into it every night before I go to bed so I don't have a list swirling around in my mind all night.

And then there is the planner that I use for a fitness tracker (the Hand Drawn Whimsy design, which stole my heart as soon as I saw the preview).

This planner isn't strictly necessary, and once upon a time I wouldn't have needed extra motivation to keep me working out. But in the last few years we've had some major life changes- I started my own business and eventually quit my software job to run it full time. Darren started and graduated from medical school and is now in residency, which also meant that we moved to another state (and towed my business along with us!). I still love working out and staying fit, but having this planner to fill up with my workouts and health stats gives me just a little bit of extra motivation- like getting to put a gold star on the calendar every day. :)

I have sections of all of these planners Frankenplanned into one binder, so I'm not jumping around between multiple books. I'll try to do a video soon showing that setup! (Because, yes, I finally feel like getting back to doing videos and have my setup at the new house ready to go!)

I also have been toying off and on with MAMBI's Happy Memory Keeping system for a year or so, as well, and things have finally settled out enough recently for me to find my groove with it. I already do Project Life, and I didn't want to just replicate that same information again in a planner format. Instead, I'm going to use it to tell 1-2 stories each week in a super simple layout format (think Heidi Swapp Storyline), and I may go back to past years to catch up on some stories that I don't quite want to do a full layout on, but still want to get into an album. I'll be sharing some of that here, too!

This post is really just a long and rambling way of saying that you'll be starting to see some planner stuff here! It won't be all planners, all the time, because I definitely still scrapbook, and I still make cards, and I still make spreads in my traveler's notebooks- I basically embrace all forms of scrapbooking and memory keeping and am excited for the additional ways that I can use planners to meet those goals!

Lawn Fawn Thermoweb Week // Adventures with Purple Tape

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Lawn Fawn and Thermoweb have teamed up this week to offer lots of inspiration combining products from the two companies. When I was asked which of Thermoweb's products I wanted to work with, the answer was easy- Purple Tape!

I've been using Post-It tape for die cutting for years, but I've always had issues with it not being quite flexible enough to adhere through the openings of teeny, tiny dies (due to it having a thick paper backing). This meant that sometimes my dies would shift during cutting, making me a sad panda- especially if it was a cut that I spent a lot of time coloring! I found that Purple Tape is wonderfully oh-so-flexible, though, and has a better hold, too! Imagine a slightly less aggressive version of blue painter's tape. I'm in love, and I'm never going back!

I combined Lawn Fawn's Deck the Halls and Snow Day stamp sets to make today's card, and I clustered some branches, pine cones, and two adorable bunnies around a sentiment banner to create my focal point. I enjoy making a scene card now and then, but making a card with a cluster at the focus feels more like me. It takes me back to the days when I did oodles of scrapbooking, and honestly I could see myself using the same composition as an embellishment on a page (note to self- try that soon!).

Thanks so much for stopping by today, and be sure to hop over to the Lawn Fawn blog to see the other bits of gorgeousness that the design team has in store for you this week!

Have a great day!

Lawn Fawn Exclusive for Simon Says Stamp // Nutty or Nice

Monday, September 3, 2018

It's Stamptember over at Simon Says Stamp, which means that it's time for their annual exclusive stamp (and die!) set from Lawn Fawn! This year's set is an adorable assortment of winter-themed squirrels called Nutty or Nice. This set has lots of smaller images, which would make it great for a shadow box or pop-up box card, but I decided to use the Peekaboo Backdrop to make a card with a series of mini-scenes.

And I used a couple of images to decorate the inside of my card, too!

Here are a few details about the card:

  • The images were colored with Zig Clean Color Real Brush markers and a water brush. I am still a bit Copic-challenged, and I just find the Zigs much easier to work with.
  • I stamped the images with Versafine Onyx Black ink and heat embossed with clear powder- my go-to when using Zigs since it helps to keep the color inside the lines.
  • The little snowflakes are actually from the just-released Winter Skies set. I needed something to use as a bit of filler, and the Lawn Fawn shop actually has a great search feature where you can find out which sets have a certain type of image/design. For example, need a tree? Search for "tree" and you'll get a listing of every Lawn Fawn stamp set with a tree in it. It's a fantastic resource!
  • I die cut the Peekaboo Backdrop frame from 80 lb. white cardstock three times and stacked/glued them together using Lawn Fawn's glue tube to give a bit of dimension. I have tried a massive number of liquid adhesives in the past and found all of them lacking. This little tube is super easy to use and works really well for both intricate and large pieces.
  • The background was ink blended using Broken China Distress Oxide ink over watercolor paper.
  • I wanted to give the tree branch a bit of a shiny look, so I used a Tim Holtz stamping platform to first stamp the branch with Lawn Fawn Doe ink, then stamped over it again using Lawn Fawn's clear embossing ink. I heat set some clear embossing powder into the clear ink, which let the brown ink underneath show through. You can use this technique with any dye ink to get the look of colored embossing powder, but all you really use is clear!
You can pick up this stamp and die set over at Simon Says Stamp during Stamptember...as long as it is in stock! In past years the Lawn Fawn set has sometimes sold out in a matter of a day or two, so don't delay if you want one!

Lawn Fawn August 2018 Inspiration Week // Double Slider Surprise (in a TN!)

Friday, August 17, 2018

Hello, and welcome back to another day of Lawn Fawn's Release and Inspiration week for this month! This week the design team is working with a batch of the new products (which will release on August 23rd), and today we're all playing with the Double Slider Surprise die!

I decided to see how well this would work to add extra photos in my latest scrapbooking love- traveler's notebooks. I know I jumped on this bandwagon late in the game, and I'm not really sure why I resisted for so long! I love this smaller format and how quickly pages come together. Sometimes, though, I still have an extra photo or two I'd like to include while still keeping lots of white (or, in this case, green) space on a page.

The slider mechanism is surprisingly easy to put together since the die set cuts everything out for you. Kelly has a great video up on the Lawn Fawn YouTube channel explaining how to put everything together and also showing some great card examples.

I will say that while I really like this idea for adding photos to one or two layouts in a TN, it can add a bit of bulk to the page since you need to use a heavier weight (I used 80lb) cardstock for the pullout tabs. It's definitely not something I would use on every page in a notebook, but it's definitely a fun way to mix things up here and there!

The little apple image is from the new Caramel Apple stamp set, and I colored it (and actually all of my images for this week) with either Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens or Arteza Real Brush Pens

Thanks so much for stopping by today! Be sure to hop over to the Lawn Fawn blog where the rest of the design team has some amazing card examples using the Double Slider Surprise waiting for you!

Lawn Fawn August 2018 Inspiration Week // Pick of the Patch

Thursday, August 16, 2018

Hi, everyone, and welcome to another fun week of inspiration using the new Lawn Fawn products that will be releasing on August 23rd! Today the design team is featuring several fall and Halloween themed stamps and dies, and you can see lots more inspiration from the other Fawny girls over on the Lawn Fawn blog!

My card today features a couple of images from the adorable new Pick of the Patch stamp set, and I paired it with some new dies (Reverse Stitched Scalloped Circle Windows) and old dies (Small Stitched Leaves and the foliage from Pretty Poppies) to create a window for my sentiment and a small cluster to finish off the frame. The leaves were cut from the new Knit Picky Fall paper collection, and I just love the autumn colors and patterns in this set!

All stamping, including the sentiment, is done in Versafine Onyx Black ink and then heat embossed with clear embossing powder. This gives the sentiment a little bit of "pop" while at the same time helping me keep my coloring in the lines on the images, something that makes coloring with watercolor brush markers (I used both Zig Clean Color and Arteza markers here) a bit easier as it tends to keep the color inside the lines.

I used a bit of Glossy Accents to add some shine and dimension to the pumpkin, and also used a Wink of Stella pen in clear glitter to add a little shimmer to the die cut leaves.

Thanks so much for stopping by- I hope you have a great day!
