project life 2012 | week 34

I didn't spend all of Week 34, 2012 at Star Wars Celebration VI, but to look at my Project Life pages for the week you'd think that's how it went down. Actually, it was really the only thing I took pictures of the whole week, so I just went with those when it was time to make this page.

I took more than 2,000 photos while at the convention, and if I'd waited until they were all edited to choose the ones I wanted to use for this week's spread it would have taken ages to get done! Instead, I made it easy on myself and chose just two DSLR photos to use- one of my favorites from the con and also one of my hotel room- and the rest are Instagram photos from my iPhone. I had a good variety of images to choose from in my feed, and it made it so much easier on me to just use those. I'm busily printing up plenty of my DSLR photos to scrap on regular layouts, though, so they'll all get used eventually.

If you're thinking that something about this week's spread looks a bit different from my previous ones, you're absolutely right! I got bored (bored, bored, bored!!) with doing a "title card" for each week and decided to do away with them from now on. I like that it leaves me extra room for photos, and I can still easily include the beginning and ending dates for the week by using a library date stamp to stick them somewhere on my page. It's kind of like a scavenger hunt each week to find them, and I love that I can now use that extra 4x6 slot for more photos.

I'll probably still include a title card for my 2011 album spreads that I'm catching up on (I've skipped around a lot and already scrapped almost all of December in it, so it might be weird to have it disappear and then reappear at intervals throughout the album), but I reserve the right to leave it out there if I want, too!

The latest sketch at Creative Scrappers is absolutely perfect for me on so many levels. It uses just two small-ish photos, has lots of layers, and even has a tag sticking out of the top (I've caught myself using shipping tags tied with twine bows on lots of layouts lately).

And if all of that weren't enough, those doily accents peeking out of the top and bottom of the photo block reminded me that I still had a few of them unused in my August Studio Calico kit, Summer of '69. I loved the colors in this kit (a mix of October Afternoon's Woodland Park, Basic Grey's Paper Cottage, and Pebbles' Sprout, among others), and it definitely helped get a nice, bright, floral vibe going on this layout.

Straight away you might notice that there's no journaling on this page. I considered adding a few sentences, but I didn't really have more to say about the photos than I've said before. The pictures are from this set, all shot on the same day at the Botanical Gardens, and I've already scrapped one layout with a few of them here telling the story of our trip to the water gardens. I pretty much said it all on that page, so this one can sit next to it in the album and just look pretty. There doesn't always have to be a burning story in order to scrap a page- sometimes it's just about the pretty photos!

I had to make myself use that sheet of Basic Grey What's Up paper as the background. I used the B side print with the subtle floating text as the background, but it's the opposite side with the massive sunburst and clouds that's been my favorite since I first spotted it. I think I might have another sheet of it in my stash somewhere, so I'll be sure to use the A side of it next time!

I'm still in the middle of choosing photos to print (be sure to check the end of this post for a Snapfish coupon code!) for my Star Wars Celebration VI album, but I've had a set of five Instagram prints on my desk and ready to scrap for the last couple of weeks now. When I came across this fantastic sketch from Let's Capture These Sketches, I just had to get them on a layout!

I stretched the sketch out by adding more photos and more pennants across the page, and I also moved the title over to the right- it just seemed to fit better over there with all the extra photo action going on, plus there was already a bit of embellishment on the left.

This is going to be the title page for my Star Wars Celebration VI album, and it's one of the few times I've actually made a title page for a full 12x12 album (I think that Week in the Life was the only other time). Believe it or not, my "normal" albums don't have title pages- just a year on the spine and then the first page jumps straight into the layouts!

You'll be seeing a lot of these same photos on the Project Life layout I'll be posting next Monday. I have no problem duplicating photos between traditional layouts and my Project Life album- they're two very different methods of documentation, and even if I use the same photos in both places I still tend to tell a different type of story in each.

Back on the subject of photo print deals- Snapfish has a coupon code out right now (valid through October 15, 2012) for 100 4x6 prints for $5.89 shipped in the US (use code WOWPRINTS). It's not listed on the Snapfish offers page, but I've seen it on several other sites including Frugal Finders. I love deals like this because not only do I get a good price on prints, but the expiration date gives me a deadline of sorts to work with- instead of the nebulous to-do item of "print photos" I have a quantifiable goal of "choose enough photos for 100 prints by October 15th." I work so much more efficiently that way!
