project life 2012 - week 31.jpg

I dug back into DCWV's Edumacation Stack (available at Michaels stores) for Week 32 of my Project Life album, this time trying to show the non-themed side of this collection since the layout I posted a couple of weeks ago was definitely very school-ish. I mentioned in that post that the Edumacation Stack contains a great variety of versatile prints that have nothing to do with school at all, and when I started this spread I chose a set of those patterns in navy, teal, and orange to play with.

That might seem like an odd color combination at first, but as I dug through my embellishments to find matching items I came out with a surprisingly wide array of pretties both old and new to coordinate. If you have (or if you purchase) this stack, you'll find that it works with, among other things, old Sassafras Paper Whimsies, washi tape from Amy Tan's first line with American Crafts, still more washi from the office supply section of Target, labels from the Stella & Rose collection by My Mind's Eye, and flair badges from Studio Calico's Take Note line. If it weren't for this paper I probably would have never paired some of these items up, but it really helps everything to hang together!

I love, love, love to make a Project Life spread while supplies from a previous layout are still out on my desk- it's such an efficient use of time...and paper!

geek girl | august 26, 2012

Sunday, August 26, 2012

This very, very tired geek just arrived home from Star Wars Celebration VI! I had an absolute blast, and I've got a little 2,000 photos on the cards in my camera and will be attempting to work my way through them all over the next week or two and then begin posting and sharing them here on the blog (I'm thinking during my usual Saturday personal photo posts) soon after that. Geek Girl will continue as usual, though, so here are this week's picks!

From the top left:

  • This incredibly detailed Death Star replica is, believe it or not, sculpted into a ping pong ball!
  • Despite my recent immersion into all things Star Wars, there are a lot of Doctor Who picks this week, too! Starting with this Sonic Screwdriver universal remote that I first spotted at Geeky Gadgets.
  • Club Jade has an excellent Tumblr blog, and while I may not always be able to trace the original source for everything, some bits like these Mad Men inspired Star Wars posters are too good not to share.
  • These 3D TARDIS nails (and many other geeky designs if you click through the link) take nail art to a whole new level.
  • I need my woodworking (and geeky) brother (loved running around CVI with you, J!) to build me a TARDIS kitty playhouse, pronto! (Just kidding, bro- you know there is no space for it in my decidedly not-bigger-on-the-inside house!!)
  • Learn how to turn ordinary pool noodles into lightsabers at Bit Rebels.
  • Hostess With the Mostess posted a fun Lego Ninjago themed birthday party!
  • If pool noodle lightsabers aren't your thing, then perhaps this lightsaber earring how-to at Instructables will be up your alley.
  • I was bummed when I missed the printing of Brandon Peat's Star Wars ABCs book, but I'm super thrilled that all of the illustrations can be viewed on his web site.
MTFBWY!!

sophie is two!

My niece turned two last month, and of course I was at her birthday party, camera in hand!

The first order of business after we all arrived was to finish decorating the cupcakes. Mom cut a bunch of really cute toppers on the Cricut using the Create a Critter cartridge, and Sophie had great fun helping to stick them all into the cakes. Actually, she may have enjoyed making the animal noises as she did so even more. :)

This is very serious business, you know!

And then she couldn't help herself any longer and bit right into a cupcake. Luckily Beth was on hand to put a Sophie-sized apron over her adorable little dress before she made too big of a mess.
